The verses

The earth was without form, and void; and darkness was on the face of the deep. And the Spirit of God was hovering over the face of the waters. Then God said, “Let there be light”; and there was light.

Genesis 1:2-3 · NKJV

Genesis 1:2-3 · ESV

With the Hebrew notations

The words

The Earth (the planet on which we live) was without form (had no physical shape or form) and void (was totally empty) and darkness (a total absence of light) was upon (above or over) the face (top or surface) of the waters. (juice or water that covered the planet) And God (ELOHIM the supreme being in plural form) said, (spoke into being) Let there be (let it happen or come to pass) light: (illumination or daylight) and there was (it came to pass or happened) light. (daylight)

What we learned

The earth was a shapeless formless, mass covered with water and in total darkness. Then, God’s Spirit moved over the unformed earth and He created light by the power of His Word.

Not only did God create Light Psa 27:1 1 Jn 1:5 , Jesus is the Light of the world. Jhn 8:12 He illuminates the darkness in our life and paid for our sin so we don’t have to. Jn 12:46 Jn 3:19 Jhn 9:5 Jhn 1:12

These verses provide further proof that the entire Bible, old and New Testament, proclaim Jesus as the Light of the world and Savior of sinners. The Old testament points forward to Jesus and the New proclaims the Gospel Message to all who would hear. Jhn 3:16 2 Co 4:6

The verse, paraphrased

The earth was formless and desolate. The ocean that covered everything was engulfed in total darkness, and the Spirit of God was moving over the water. Then God said “let there be light”; and it was so.
